I am a Wiccan. As a Witch, I see the divine not as a single monolithic entity, but as being both male and female, God AND Goddess.
However, unlike some other modern Pagans, I don't spend my time seeing the Gods as aspects of a single divine (a.k.a. Duotheism - as in "All Gods are One God, All Goddesses are one Goddess, and there is one initiator"), but as separate, yet cohesive, entities. In this way, I am more of a "hard core" polytheist. As such, I often take great umbrage at the attitude that many academics take that the move from polytheism to monotheism represents some sort of big evolution in the human psyche. To me, the insistence that there's only one God, hence only one true path to the divine, has done much to divide us, and has caused much discord in a world trying to find it's unity in the modern age.
As for my own concept of the Gods, well...that's somewhat different. It's still rooted in solid Wiccan theological concepts, but it sees them in a unique way. It's a bit dicey to follow in spots, but I'll try to be concise...
Basically, I believe that there may very well be one ultimate source that is the ultimate divine source of everything in every conceivable sphere of creation. However, I believe that this ultimate source, if it truly is a singularity (it very well could still be a perfect balanced force, with no singularity), then it is SO far removed from our perceptions that our human psyches would have absolutely no chance of ever BEGINNING to relate to it. Our perceptions are firmly rooted in the physical sphere, and we are incapable of the metaphorical framework to ever truly begin to understand.
However, being sentient beings, we yearn to explore our source. We are creative beings, and desire to have knowledge of that which created us. We reach towards this divine source in constant yearning. As such, we construct human-looking and/or acting models and conceive of the divine source(s) to be "just like that".
The divine source(s), in infinite love, reach towards us by placing the divine energy within our thought forms that allows us to touch the divine through them. As such, my theory falls (slightly) into the "Archetypes that serve as divine gateway" school, but with one exception:
Each of the Gods and Goddesses has an independent existence.
Many see "gateway" Gods as means through which we relate to the divine, but that have little existence outside of our experiences with them. They see the Gods as masks that the "ultimate divine" put on to chat us up, and then can be as easily discarded as a rubber mask when done. When a culture stops worshiping in that mode, then that god-form winks out of existence.
I, however, see the Gods as independent spirits, each with a personality and an individuality (much like us). Granted, they're an elevated consciousness (beyond human pettiness...thus, no real God wars as seen in Greco-Roman mythology), but they're more than just an illusion worn by some ultimate source. When a civilization stops worshiping the old Gods, then they just hang in the spirit (where no time exists anyway), ready for any to call upon them again.
Thus, the energy of Herne is radically different than the energy of Apollo, and it's not just because of their "aspects". They are distinct. This has allowed me to come to know my Gods in a personal way, chatting like old friends. They are my allies and greatest strength. All Gods are created equal, BTW, so no need to worry about pissing off some easily angered deity...your patron God/dess will keep you in perfect loving good care.
Don't have a patron yet, and just call on generic God/Goddess names and/or imagery? No problem...when you have the calling, you will know. You will be called in an unmistakable way. When this happens, it will be a great joy, and a wonderful source of peace in even the most troubled times. Until then, read up on Pagan mythology/theology. I've listed some great books below.
If you know anything about music, then what you should think about is the harmony. A harmony is what happens when sound waves of two different notes collide and create a third, distinct tone. This third tone has no independent existence, it's entirely dependent on the vibration of the first two notes for it's very being. Take away one note, and the harmont disappears.
I'm not sure if I absolutely believe this, but what if our universe is a tri-tone, a harmony that was birthed by the coming together of two divine wills, i.e. the God and Goddess? An eternal Yin/Yang interplay with all that we know as the result.
I use this to show that, at the centre of everything, there doesn't just have to be one initiator.
Blessed Be,
Taliesin
