Today, I'd like to go over a unique way that we, as magickal people, can have a positive impact on the political scene.
What can we, as Pagans, do to positively effect elections in this country? This is a question we must constantly ask ourselves. There's no question that we can organize, educate, and work our collective tails off, but anyone can do that. Sure, we can network with people in Pagan circles, but that can be a dicey proposition at times. What is it that we as magickal people can do to make sure that the Bush error...er, era...isn't sustained by some other right-wing lackey?
The idea I have may surprise you...but first, a little history (of course).
During the darkest days of the Battle of Britain during World War II, the Occultists of England decided on a potent, if unconventional, course of action. Over a three day cycle, they did a coordinated magickal/spiritual working aimed at stopping the coming invasion of their country. It wasn't just Wiccans (though they tell the story often), but it was Wiccans, Ceremonial Magicians of various paths, Masons, Christians doing prayer, etc. All was done at the same time, on the same nights, with the same goal in mind: stopping the invasion of their nation. Some worked magick, some prayed, but all worked together.
Some say that this never happened, but we have independent accounts from unconnected people all verifying that the event indeed took place (the final rite was done on August 1st, the ancient festival of Lammas). One may say it was coincidence, but the invasion never happened...Hitler called it off at the last minute to instead invade Russia, the act that marked the beginning of the end of his reign of terror.
We, too, are faced with a dire situation. Theocrats are trying to sieze control of our country to impose their own narrow-minded version of religion down our throats. They have been largely co-opted by the forces of corporate greed, manipulating people of faith to further their unholy agenda of raping the planet and subjugating the poor, who are the most vulnerable of all of the Gods' children. And worst of all, we have a Republican political machine and an administration in the White House who, even when they're not actively promoting this agenda, are willing to look the other way and let it be done. I think one thing we can all agree on is that this must change!
What I am proposing is novel, unconventional, and will probably be a tad controversial. However, this is one of the few forums where I can get a fair hearing from people who are of a Pagan/magickal spiritual path. I propose that we coordinate and execute a national (or even international) working aimed at removing this threat from our lives through the ballot box. Through a great working during the 2008 elections, I want to give that one little push to tip the scales away from the abyss and towards a brighter future.
I'm not talking about cursing, here. We can do this while keeping our aims entirely positive. To elect a good candidate as opposed to defeating a bad one, to motivate progressive voters to go to the polls, protect the voting rights of all people, etc. Even something as simple as a binding spell to thwart the efforts of those who would fradulently manipulate the final vote talleys could do a world of good.
I'm not proposing that this can replace traditional political action. We still have to organize, educate, and motivate people to get out and vote, and vote well. However, with the razor thin margins in the past two major elections, I really don't think we can leave any stone unturned. We have to do whatever we can to achieve the best results. This includes working spiritually as well.
